Election 2008
Election 2008
March 17, 2008 - A Ron Paul volunteer and organizer in Kansas City confirms that the Jackson County Republican caucus elected a nearly-complete slate of Paul delegates at its convention Saturday.
Larry Holland says the caucus elected more than 170 Paul delegates out of an estimated 187 available. Those delegates will eventually, directly and indirectly, pick delegates to the Republican National Convention.
"We all know that on the first ballot, we have to vote for McCain," Holland said, but "we can also help affect the Republican platform, and bring it back to its conservative, libertarian values."
Holland also says Jackson County Republican chairman Bunk Farrington walked out of the session, held at William Chrisman High School. We've got a call in to him.
Ron Paul supporters packed caucuses in other counties, with mixed results.
Details are sketchy, but we're told supporters of Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul took over party conventions in several Missouri counties Saturday, including Jackson County, electing Ron Paul slates in several of them.
Delegates elected at the county level will attend congressional district conventions in several weeks, where roughly half of the state's delegates to the Republican National Convention will be picked.
The rest will be picked at the party's state convention in late May and early June, again by delegates picked by the county convention attendees.
As a practical matter, though, electing Paul delegates - even at the state convention, planned for late May and early June - won't change the presidential nomination picture. Missouri is a winner-take-all state for the GOP and delegates are bound to vote for John McCain on the first ballot. There won't be a second.
But Paul delegates could influence platform discussions at the state level, and, if sent to the national convention, could saddle McCain with a platform with which he won't be happy.READ MORE

Election 2008
March 12, 2008 - There are questions surrounding whether or not John McCain - who was born in the Panama Canal Zone in 1936, when it was a U.S. territory - is legally a "natural-born citizen."
According to the Constitution, if McCain isn't "natural-born" then he can't be president.
However, the definition of "natural-born" has never been fully fleshed out. Now, the Associated Press reports, "a federal judge in California has been asked to determine if the Republican presidential candidate meets the legal test to qualify for the White House."
McCain and attorney Ted Olson believe the presumptive Republican nominee is in the clear.
"I am confident that the United States Supreme Court, should it ever address the issue, would agree" that McCain qualifies as a natural-born citizen, said Olson in a statement.READ MORE

Election 2008
March 10, 2008 - In an interview on CNN Monday morning, long-shot presidential candidate Ron Paul, whose campaign is winding to a close, says he is unlikely to support presumptive Republican nominee John McCain and he left open the possibility of mounting a third-party bid for the White House.
Recognizing the mathematical impossibility of overtaking presumed GOP nominee John McCain, Paul says his campaign for the White House is down-shifting as he focuses on building his "revolution" in other ways.
The Texas congressman dismissed talk of a third-party presidential campaign as impractical, but he did not completely rule out the idea.
"I don't think it's very practical, and I think Republicans deserve to have at least a conservative to vote for," Paul said. "The conservative base does not the support John McCain because he's identified more with the liberal Democrats. So why should they be disenfranchised? Although the odds are slim, but they have a right to vote for someone that stands for traditional Republican principles: limited government, personal liberties. I mean, this is something the Republicans used to brag about and preach, so they deserve a chance to vote for that."
Paul said he likely would not support McCain for the sake of unifying the party.
"If you can unify a party and reject your principles, what is unity worth? ... I'm not likely to support John McCain unless he changes his views," Paul told CNN's John King Monday morning. "He doesn't represent anything I've talked about for 30 years. ... How could I reject everything I've talked about for 30 years and say, now it's all over, unity is the most important thing?"
The libertarian Texas Republican rocketed to prominence after his supporters coalesced on the Internet and fueled independent fundraising drives that shoveled millions of dollars in donations to Paul's campaign. Despite the passion of his most committed backers, though, Paul was unable to make much of a dent in any GOP primaries or caucuses this year.
Paul told CNN that he would still compete for delegates in upcoming contests in Pennsylvania and elsewhere to accrue as many delegates as possible to vote on party platforms and other issues at the GOP convention this summer in Minneapolis.
"The true revolution on the change of the party as well as change of the country is ongoing," he said. We feel very good about it which means I'm still in the race but certainly in manner that is less energetic than it was six months ago."READ MORE

Election 2008
AUSTIN, Texas - March 7, 2008 - Volunteers who worked the Jester Center caucus on Tuesday are suspicious of at least one of the caucus lists, the precinct chairman said late Thursday night. At least three students who signed the list verified that the candidates attached to their names were not the candidates they voted for.
Government senior Ray Skidmore, precinct chair for the voting precinct that includes all UT dorms, said one of the caucus volunteers on Thursday noticed almost identical handwriting on one of the caucus sheets. Volunteers were recounting the caucus numbers Wednesday and Thursday, Skidmore said, just to double-check before turning them in today. Information from all caucuses - forms and the official delegate counts - are due to the Travis County clerk's office today by 6 p.m.
When recounting, the volunteer noticed a whole list had Sen. Hillary Clinton written in similar handwriting in the presidential preference column for each of the six voters on that list. Skidmore started calling each of the voters on the list when he reached finance senior Ronesha Holmes, who told him she did not write Clinton as her preference; Holmes said she was instructed to leave that line blank.
Even one discrepancy threw up a flag of suspicion, Skidmore said.
As he continued calling people on the list Thursday, he found that two other students, history and pre-med sophomore Abigail Cheney and government sophomore Adam Aldrete, said they did not fill in a presidential preference and that Clinton was not who they would have listed.
"I think it's pretty disappointing," Skidmore said. "It might not affect the [number of] delegates, but it's the integrity of the process that may turn people off." He added that he was sorry for the inconveniences or problems the situation may cause.
Both Cheney and Aldrete said those in their caucus line were given a sheet of paper and told to fill out as much information as possible and that the last person in line would take the list to the appropriate caucus official.READ MORE

Election 2008
One day a florist went to a barber for a haircut.
After the cut, he asked about his bill, and the barber replied, “I cannot accept money from you. I'm doing community service this week.”
The florist was pleased and left the shop.
When the barber went to open his shop the next morning, there was a “thank you” card and a dozen roses waiting for him at his door.
Later, a cop came in for a haircut, and when he tried to pay his bill, the barber again replied, “I cannot accept money from you. I'm doing community service this week.”
The cop was happy and left the shop.
The next morning when the barber went to open up, there was a “thank you” card and a dozen donuts waiting for him at his door.
Later that day, a college professor came in for a haircut, and when he tried to pay his bill, the barber again replied, “I cannot accept money from you. I'm doing community service this week.”
The professor was very happy and left the shop.
The next morning, when the barber opened his shop, there was a “thank you” card and a dozen different books, such as “How to Improve Your Business”, and “Becoming More Successful.”
'Then a Congressman came in for a haircut, and when he went to pay his bill, the barber again replied, “I cannot accept money from you. I'm doing community service this week.”
The Congressman was very happy and left the shop.
The next morning, when the barber went to open up, there were a dozen Congressmen lined up waiting for a free haircut.
And that, my friends, illustrates the fundamental difference between the citizens of our country and politicians.

Election 2008
February 29, 2008 - McCain crashed 5 jets, plus he was responsible for the horrible USS Forrestal fire in 1967. Surviving crewmen and those who investigated the Forrestal fire case reported that McCain deliberately 'wet-started' his A-4E Skyhawk to shake up the guy in the F-4 Phantom behind his A-4. 'Wet-starts', done either deliberately (the starter motor switch allowed kerosene to pool in the engine and give a wet start) or accidentally, shoot a large flame from the tail of the aircraft. In McCain's case, the 'wet-start' 'cooked off' and launched the M34 Zuni rocket from the rear F-4 that punctured the Skyhawk's fuel tank, knocked the M-65 1000 lb. bomb off it's 500 lb. rated mount, and touched off the
explosions and massive fire. The F-4 pilot was reportedly killed in the conflagration, along with 167 of his fellow Forrestal shipmates (including those who died later from wounds suffered). 'Wet starting' was a common practice among young 'hot-dog' pilots. McCain was quickly (they were still counting the Forrestal dead) transferred to the USS Oriskany (the only Forrestal crewman to be immediately transferred).
