WASHINGTON (PNN) - February 28, 2016 - The late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia was worth billions of dollars to corporate Amerika, if a Dow Chemical settlement made public Friday is any indication.

Dow was in the midst of appealing a $1.06 billion class-action antitrust ruling after a jury found that it had conspired with other chemical companies to fix prices for urethane, a material used in furniture and appliances.

But because of Scalia’s death and the sudden unlikelihood of finding five votes on the Supreme Court to overturn the case, Dow decided to settle for $835 million, the bulk of the original award.

TEHERAN, Iran (PNN) - February 28, 2016 - Allies of Iran's reformist President Hassan Rouhani have won a landslide victory in Teheran, in the first parliamentary vote since Iran signed a nuclear deal with world powers.

With 90% of the votes counted, the pro-Rouhani List of Hope is set to take all 30 parliamentary seats in the capital.

DAMASCUS, Syria (PNN) - February 27, 2016 - Last Monday, Washington and Moscow hailed an agreement that would see a temporary cessation of hostilities in Syria.

The ceasefire went into effect on Saturday and so far, so good. Clashes and air strikes across western Syria largely abated Saturday morning, as an internationally backed truce took hold in parts of the country where rebels have been fighting the regime. Although the SAA apparently hit a few rebel positions east of Damascus, overall, it was a calm morning.

ONTARIO, Canada (PNN) - February 26, 2016 - The idea of a basic income for everyone, provided by the government regardless of employment status, is coming back to Canada for the first time since Pierre Elliott Trudeau was in power.

The notion of a basic income for all citizens has circled the fringes of Canadian politics for years. Now, the Ontario Liberal Party has announced plans to investigate a basic income pilot project this year as part of the 2016 budget, which was published on Thursday.

BRUSSELS, Belgium (PNN) - February 25, 2016 - Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg doesn’t want to have to skirt her country’s responsibilities under the Geneva Convention and she doesn’t want to trample over human rights either, but she will if she has no choice.

"It is a force majeure proposal which we will have in the event that it all breaks down,” Solberg said, describing new measures she believes Norway may have to take if Sweden buckles under the weight of the refugee influx which saw some 163,000 asylum seekers inundate the country last year.
