SONORA, Kalifornia (PNN) - July 24, 2016 - For years now, residents of Sonora, Kalifornia, have been hearing a window-shaking loud and so far officially unexplained BOOM! that always happens between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. daily.

The explanation floating around Sonora from a local geologist/teacher is that an Army Depot in Hawthorne, Nevada, all the way across the state and behind a mountain range, which disposes of old munitions like bombs, might be what residents have been hearing.

ECUADOREAN EMBASSY, England (PNN) - July 22, 2016 - WikiLeaks has released nearly 20,000 emails it says are from the accounts of Democrat National Committee officials.

The release could cloud the upcoming Democrat Party convention, which kicks off next week in Philadelphia.

It is unclear how WikiLeaks obtained the records, but the release comes weeks after a hacker (or hackers) going by the name Guccifer 2.0 began releasing records obtained through the DNC’s computer systems. The hacker claims to be Romanian, but many suspect that the records were taken by a team of Russian hackers.

BRUSSELS, Belgium (PNN) - July 21, 2016 - The attempted military coup in Turkey sent shock waves through the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. No matter how the coup turned out, it would mean bad news for the alliance. If the attempt had succeeded, NATO would have faced the embarrassment of having a member governed by a military dictatorship. Although that type of situation was tolerated during the Cold War (with respect to founding member Portugal, several military regimes in Turkey, and the brutal Greek junta from 1967 to 1974), matters are much different in the current environment. Since NATO portrays itself as an alliance of enlightened democracies, tolerating a dictatorial member now would be so politically toxic as to be nearly impossible.

But while your attention is elsewhere, huge moves are afoot in the Asia-Pacific. Specifically, those moves are afoot in the South China Sea, where the Permanent Court of Arbitration handed down a long-awaited ruling last week in favor of the Philippines in their long-running dispute over territorial waters with China. The court, operating under the arbitration provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, ruled that China does not have “historical rights” to the waters in question and that their reclamation activity in the area has already caused irreparable environmental damage and should stop immediately. China promptly rejected the ruling exactly as they said they would.
