WASHINGTON - May 27, 2011 - Rep. Ron Paul (R-Tex.), known and celebrated for his Libertarian views, delivered a stunning critique of the American Republic on the House floor yesterday. Paul told Congress, “The last nail is being driven into the coffin of the American Republic. Yet Congress remains in total denial as our liberties are rapidly fading before our eyes.” Paul backed up his dismal outlook with the following reason: “The rule of law is constantly rejected and authoritarian answers are offered as panaceas for all our problems.”
Ron Paul attacked a number of U.S. policies that he believes contribute to the crumbling of the American Republic. Paul called out welfarism as one of these programs. “Runaway welfarism is used to benefit the rich at the expense of the middle class,” argued Paul. Paul also identified a number of presidential powers that are unnecessary and unconstitutional. Among the powers that Paul points to are the ability to order assassinations, engage in torture, and wage war at will.
Ron Paul, who is also strongly against raising the debt ceiling, said that the federal government is to blame for “borrowing, permitting runaway spending, endless debt, and special interest bailouts.” Paul’s alternative to raising the debt ceiling is to drastically cut federal spending to cover only those programs and policies that the government is mandated to support because of the Constitution.
The Patriot Congressman also pointed out the misunderstanding that he sees in Congress and the Executive Branch, that “our enemies are driven to attack us for our freedoms and prosperity, and not because of our deeply flawed foreign policy.” Paul added that the consequence of failing to acknowledge the real reason for Islamic extremism against America is that “endless, unnamed and undeclared wars will continue and our wonderful experience with liberty will end.”
Ron Paul made his opinion clear on Wednesday; it is his view that “the fate of the American Republic is now sealed - unless these recent trends are quickly reversed.” Also on Wednesday, Paul told fellow lawmakers at a hearing on Libya that the relationship between the War Powers Resolution and U.S. military intervention overseas “is a mess.”
Ron Paul announced his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination on May 13, 2011. Paul also ran for president in 1988 as the Libertarian nominee and again in 2008 as a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination. Paul is a favorite among Tea Party supporters, those who care about the Rule of Law, people who believe in the Constitution, and freedom lovers everywhere.
