OSLO, Norway (PNN) - July 1, 2026 - While the world races to put artificial intelligence into classrooms, Norway just decided to remove it.
Starting this August, students aged 6 to 13 generally won't get access to generative AI in school. Teens 14 to 16 can use it, but only under teacher supervision.
Only 17 to 19-year-olds are encouraged to learn it properly, for university and work.
Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre’s reasoning is simple: children first need to learn to read, write and do math. The fundamentals before the shortcuts.
I find myself caught in an interesting middle ground with this.
One is I totally agree that you only learn by doing things and in general the more stripped back the better.
The other is I have seen my son learn more in a 10-minute conversation with AI than reading or studying the old way.
Like most things, how you use it and your overall approach and mindset is what will determine the long standing impact and effect it has.
