MIAMI, Florida - January 6, 2011 - A Florida professor was arrested and removed from a plane Monday after his fellow passengers alerted crewmembers they thought he had a suspicious package in the overhead compartment.

That "suspicious package" turned out to be keys, a bagel with cream cheese and a hat.

Ex-cop: Police 'using dogs to trample our rights as citizens'

CHICAGO, Illinois - January 6, 2011 - A study of "false positives" involving drug-sniffing police dogs suggests some police forces may be using canines to do an end-run around constitutional protections against search and seizure, and may be profiling racial minorities in the process.

SAN FRANCISCO, Kalifornia - January 4, 2011 - The Kalifornia Supreme Court allowed police Monday to search arrestees' cell phones without a warrant, saying defendants lose their privacy rights for any items they're carrying when taken into custody.

Under U.S. Supreme Court precedents, "this loss of privacy allows police not only to seize anything of importance they find on the arrestee's body... but also to open and examine what they find," the state court said in a 5-2 ruling.

HOUSTON, Texas - January 4, 2011 - A local family was terrorized, ambushed outside their own home and held at gunpoint. They had just pulled into their driveway on Glenfield near Durango Falls in northwest Harris County Monday night when the suspects threatened the family, and the husband fought back.

Elvis Munoz, 17, is charged with aggravated robbery. A juvenile suspect is also facing charges and authorities are interviewing a third suspect. Officials say a quick-thinking homeowner showed the suspects they picked the wrong victim.
