SWAT standoff may have started over stop sign dispute!
SEMINOLE, Florida - December 13, 2010 - A SWAT standoff in Seminole is now over, but it appears to have started over some sort of stop sign dispute, Pinellas County Sheriff's deputies said.
At 8:26 Sunday night, deputies say John Breingan, who lives on 72nd Avenue in Seminole, walked out to the street in front of his apartment to confront three people in a vehicle.
The argument was apparently sparked by the issue of whether the car ran a stop sign on the street, sheriff's office spokeswoman Cecilia Barreda said.
Breingan threw a punch, then retreated into his home, Barreda said.
According to deputies, he came back outside with a gun and fired shots at the car. No one was hurt by the gunfire.
The vehicle sped off and Breingan went back inside as deputies responded to the neighborhood.
Three other people inside the apartment came out, but Barreda said the suspect refused to leave and launched a standoff with deputies that continued into Monday morning.
Breingan, who has a juvenile criminal record and turned 18 last month, has been uncooperative and agitated as deputies worked to make contact with him, Barreda said.
Deputies blocked off 72nd Avenue near the home and shut off power to the area immediately around Breingan's apartment. The standoff was near Seminole Boulevard, which. remained open to traffic.
