WASHINGTON (PNN) - November 10, 2009 – Would-be dictator Senator Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) seems to think that the Constitution for the United States empowers Congress to enslave the Amerikan people, as long as the intent is to look out for their general welfare.

CNSNews.com asked Merkley, “Specifically where in the Constitution does Congress get its authority to mandate that individuals purchase health care?”

Merkley said, “The very first enumerated power gives the power to provide for the common defense and the general welfare. So it’s right on, right on the front end.”

Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution reads, "The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defense and general Welfare of the United States."
