SPOKANE, Washington (PNN) - June 15, 2010 - A federal appeals court has ruled that the strip search of a suspected drug dealer by Spokane police in 2005 was legal.

A panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the decision of U.S. District Judge Robert Whaley that the civil rights of John Burton were not violated by police officers.

Burton sued after he was strip-searched at a Spokane home by officers with a warrant to arrest Burton on suspicion of selling crack cocaine. No drugs were found.

Burton contended that officers uttered disparaging remarks and allowed a female officer to observe the search.
