Blackhawk helicopter and Homeland Security on hand to catch burglar!
OPA-LOCKA, Florida - December 8, 2009 - Police set up a perimeter in the area of Opa-locka Boulevard and 14th Avenue Tuesday afternoon, where a burglary suspect was reportedly hiding out in a nearby house.
Miami-Dade police said the call came in as a burglary in progress. The law enforcement response was enormous.
“I mean they were coming from east, south, north, west - I mean everywhere, zipping up here," neighborhood resident Ricardo Gibson told Local 10's Todd Tongen.
“Some of the older folks that live in the neighborhood are scared to death," said neighbor Jim Fike.
According to police, an officer fired her gun, hitting the suspect.
“An officer confronted the subject at that location who was indeed the burglar. A confrontation ensued in which the officer was forced to discharge her firearm striking the subject," said Miami-Dade Police Spokeswoman Rebeca Perez.
The unidentified man was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital where his condition is unknown.
"The lady was in the house when they came. She didn’t answer the door so, they started breaking into the back window. She ran out of the house to my neighbor’s house," said next-door-neighbor Aaron Thompson.
Meanwhile, a Homeland security Blackhawk helicopter brought in members of Miami-Dade’s special response team who were on a joint training mission with U.S. customs at the time.
Heavily armed SRT members formed a tactical formation and searched the neighborhood as well as the home. A command center vehicle, along with canine units and an armored assault truck were brought in to assist in the operation.
When it was over, police said they only found the alleged burglar. They would not confirm if he was armed.
“I love my neighborhood, but you got young, silly people doing stupid things that make no sense," Thompson said. "It’s just crazy."
