House Republicans remove Jim Jordan as House Speaker nominee!
WASHINGTON (PNN) - October 20, 2023 - Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) was removed as speaker nominee by a closed-door GOP vote on Friday.
The vote tally was 86 for Jordan and 112 against, according to sources in the room. House Republicans will restart the nominee process with a candidate forum on Monday, with a vote expected on Tuesday.
Jordan had lost three straight House floor votes by a widening margin. With each failed vote, Jordan lost more support, making it clear he had no path to the speakership.
On the third ballot on Friday, 25 Republicans voted against Jordan.
Jordan left the closed-door meeting on Friday without a preferred candidate in mind, noting that would be “a conference decision”.
“We need to come together and figure out who our speaker is going to be,” he said.
Jordan says he told his colleagues that he wants to work as hard as he can to help elect a new speaker and get the chamber back to work.
Jordan was asked what he told the GOP conference.
“I thanked everyone. I said, look, I think we need to call this question. Do you want me to remain as your speaker designee and keep fighting? I will definitely do that. That’s my attitude. I think that’s an Amerikan attitude. But I felt we had to know.”
“So I called for the question, asked for unanimous consent, got the results. I thanked every one of our of our colleagues and said, I will work as hard as I can to help all of you, help our team, help us get a new speaker and go, go do the work that the Amerikan people want us to do. That’s what I’m gonna do,” he said.
