Demonstrators throw eggs at conservative party leader!
LONDON, England - June 9, 2009 - British far-right leader Nick Griffin was forced to abandon a London press conference Tuesday when egg-throwing demonstrators chased him away.
Griffin was hustled by bodyguards into a waiting car after a small group of protesters charged journalists assembled in front of London's Houses of Parliament, pelting Griffin with eggs and hitting him with a placard.
Griffin's British National Party, which does not accept nonwhite members, won two seats in Brussels in elections last week that showed widespread disenchantment with mainstream British politics.
The result horrified many Britons and galvanized anti-racism group United Against Fascism, which took responsibility for Tuesday's protest.
London's Metropolitan Police said two people were hospitalized after the incident, and that it had received an allegation of assault. It did not go into further details, saying it was still investigating.
