Truth

Regardless of any particular faith, culture, race or class, I have found that the vast majority of people agree on one thing: the Word of God is, by definition, Truth.

If you are seeking a point of universal agreement from which to build a spiritually evolved society, one in which each individual is concerned not only for himself but also for the whole world, then this seems a good place to start.

In his classic, Republic, Plato describes a chair that encompasses the essence of all chairs: all designs, materials, shapes, sizes, etc. are included in the platonic Chair. In this manner, he also addresses universal Beauty. Plato’s Republic personifies the philosophical pursuit of Universal Justice. It is a worthwhile goal, but never forget that actual justice must always be based on Truth.

I believe there is a platonic Truth, an ultimate Truth: one that stretches beyond the limitations naturally occurring in your truth or my truth. It is the Universal Truth. I believe that this Truth is the star by which people of principle guide their behavior.

In ancient times, before computer technology permeated every facet of modern life, when a mariner sailed on the open sea, he never steered a straight course to his destination. The winds and tides always took him off course, but the mariner maintained his general direction by using the North Star as his guide, thereby bringing his ship back to its true course and ultimately arriving at his intended destination.

Truth represents the North Star for the human race. Not any one specific version of the truth, but the platonic, absolute, comprehensive, Universal Truth. If you set Truth as your respective North Star, then it will always serve to bring you back on course when you get sidetracked by the winds and tides of life.

For example, consider the actions of your elected representatives, Members of Congress, the President and Vice President, etc. Observe the “players” in the current political melodrama of action and intrigue. Do their actions reflect their words? Do they do what they say they will do? Are they acting with integrity? Do they tell the truth? By asking questions like these, you will develop an effective means of accurately evaluating the behavior and thereby the character of not only your political representatives, but of anyone and everyone.

How about you? Do your actions reflect your words? Do you do what you say you will do? Or do you find excuses and explanations to justify breaking your word? Do you keep your word? Honor your agreements? Tell the truth? If not - and we all fall off the Path now and then - then I hope you will make every effort to correct any trespasses on your brethren.

Is Truth really important to you? Is it the most important thing to you? Is it more important than anything else in your life? Why not, if it is the Word of God?

Truth is not a destination to reach. It is not a place that, when you get there, you can finally stop and rest. Truth does not allow for complaisance or apathy. Instead, Truth requires your eternal vigilance against the actions of those who would perpetuate lies in order to achieve their objectives.

It may be most accurate to say that Truth, like perfection, is a condition to which each of us should aspire, even though we never actually achieve it. It is a direction to follow, a concept designed to focus your attention on justice and right ruling. Therefore, when you pursue Truth, you find yourselves on the proper path; the one that will take you where your spirit wants you to go.
